Former India captain MS Dhoni said he was emotional after India’s defeat to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, which turned out be his last outing in international cricket.

Former India captain MS Dhoni revealed he was not able to control his emotions after India’s defeat to New Zealand in the World Cup 2019 semi-finals. The heartbreaking run-out in India’s failed chase remains fresh in the minds of millions of Indian fans and it seems Dhoni was hurting the most.

It turned out to be MS Dhoni’s last match, representing India although the former captain announced his retirement a year later. Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar had revealed earlier that he had seen the likes of MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya in an inconsolable state after the defeat in the World Cup semi-final and Dhoni acknowledged it, saying a lot of emotions were running through his head.

Dhoni, speaking at an event in Bengaluru, said he decided after the semi-final that it was the last game he played for India. Dhoni recalled a conversation with the trainer in which he told him that he does not need the tracking device, which is used by players, anymore.

“It’s very difficult to control your emotions when you have lost a close game. Inside, I was planning. To me, that was the last day I played cricket for India. I announced my retirement after a year, but the fact was that day I retired. We are given these tracker machines and all that. I went to the trainer and I gave it back to him. He was like ‘no, no keep it’. I was like how do I tell him that I don’t need it anymore, I won’t be using it? I didn’t want to announce it at that point in time,” MS Dhoni said.

Dhoni explained why he became very emotional, explaining the pride a sportsperson takes in representing the country.

“Once you are high on emotion, you know the only thing you have done in the last 12-15 yeas is playing cricket and then you realise there is no more chance of representing your country. It’s a very big thing. So many people are there, but only a few get a chance to represent their country. And sportsperson, they have that luxury. Once I quit cricket, there was no way I would be representing my country. I am an Indian citizen and all, but to bring some gloryâ€æ all those things were in my mind, you are high on emotions at that time,” Dhoni added.

The semi-final of the 2019 World Cup was a rollercoaster of emotions, with India’s top order, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul, struggling against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack. The Indian team was reduced to a dismal 5/3 and later 24/4, with Trent Boult, Matt Henry, and James Neesham sharing the wickets.

The turning point of the match was the run-out of MS Dhoni. Martin Guptill, who had been relatively quiet throughout the tournament, spotted a ball coming towards him at deep backward square leg.

With only one stump to aim at, he sent a laser-guided throw that found its mark. Dhoni was run out, falling short by just 15 centimeters. This moment was not just a game-changer but also marked the end of an era in Indian cricket as it turned out to be Dhoni’s last international match for India.

Dhoni’s run-out sparked a wave of emotions among fans and players alike. Known for his calm and composed demeanor, Dhoni was seen to be visibly upset.
