Legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that Saudi Pro League is better than France’s Ligue 1. Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards event in Dubai, Ronaldo said that the Saudi League is more competitive than the French League where only two to three teams fight for the title.

Ronaldo made his comments while accepting the top goal-scorer award of 2023, where he beat Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi to the title.

“The Saudi league is not worse than Ligue 1,” he said. “The Saudi Pro League is more competitive than Ligue 1, I can say that after one year spent there. We are better than the French league already now,” Ronaldo said.

The player joined Saudi’s Al Nassr after falling out with Manchester United back in 2022. Ronaldo took major digs at the club, coach Erik ten Hag and even the owners during his turbulent time with the club. Ronaldo and the vlub mutually terminated their contract and the player went to Saudi in a record deal.

“I feel so happy at Al Nassr, it’s a great move. Saudi is in a process, it will take longâ€æ but step by step they will go to the top level. I think the Saudi Pro League will be among the top three leagues in the world. People in Saudi will be proud,” Ronaldo further added at the event.

Ronaldo has made 44 appearances for Al Nassr since joining the club and has scored 38 goals. The league was recently in the news after former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson exited the league after just six months of joining. Henderson had ended his 12-year-old association with Liverpool to join Al Etifaq. Henderson had a three-year deal with the club.

“I’m sad to say that I will be leaving Al Ettifaq with immediate effect. It wasn’t an easy decision but one that I feel is best for me and my family. I want to take this opportunity to thank the club & the fans for all the support during my time. I really felt the love from Day One. I’ll keep watching & hoping for your success. Good luck for the future,” Henderson said in his statement.
